Seven years ago today this question would have been ridiculous. Total taxation as a percentage of GDP is much lower in the PRC than the US (18% China vs 35% America). Plus, China has a seemingly enormous grey market economy that operates outside of the reach of government interference and control.

Chinese lunch break
The strangest thing happens. Everybody in the office stops doing anything at around 11:45 am, and eats (not too strange..), but when you look around at 1:30 pm, everyone’s asleep!
